Record Clear Screen Tutorials

Capture clean, readable screen recordings in Mont

beginner ⏱ 10

Great screen recordings look effortless, but they require preparation. This tutorial covers the techniques that make recordings clear and easy to follow.

Before You Record

Clean Up Your Screen

Viewers will see everything. Before recording:

  • Close unrelated applications and tabs
  • Hide desktop icons or use a neutral wallpaper
  • Enable Do Not Disturb to prevent notification interruptions
  • Sign out of personal accounts if visible

Make Text Readable

Viewers watch on phones and small screens. Increase font sizes:

  • Minimum: 16pt text in any app you're demonstrating
  • Code editors: Use Presentation Mode or increase font to 18pt+
  • Web browsers: Zoom to 125% (Cmd/Ctrl + Plus)
  • Quick test: Shrink your window to half size. If you can't read it, neither can viewers.

Start Recording

  1. Press R (or click Screen in controls)
  2. Choose what to capture:
    • Browser Tab — cleanest for web demos
    • Window — single app, hides desktop
    • Entire Screen — multi-app demos
  3. Click Share to confirm
  4. Press Shift+R to start recording
  5. Give yourself 2-3 seconds of static screen before speaking

Cursor Technique

Your cursor guides attention. Use it deliberately:

Move slowly: Fast, jerky movements lose viewers.

Pause before clicking: Move to the target, pause briefly, then click. This shows viewers what you're about to do.

Circle to highlight: When pointing something out, make a small circle around it.

Narration Pattern

For each action, follow this pattern:

  1. Announce: "Now I'll click the Export button"
  2. Do: Move cursor, pause, click
  3. Confirm: "And you can see the export dialog appeared"

This keeps viewers oriented. Let your voice drive the pace—don't get ahead of your narration.

Handling Mistakes

Small stumble: Keep going. Minor verbal mistakes are often not worth fixing.

Wrong action: Say "Let me try that again," then demonstrate correctly.

Major mistake: Stop recording. It's easier to re-record than edit around a disaster.

After recording, use Edit Your Recordings to trim mistakes.

Pre-Recording Checklist

Before every screen recording:

  • Do Not Disturb enabled
  • Desktop and browser cleaned
  • Font sizes increased for readability
  • Microphone selected and tested
  • Starting state set up correctly

If Something Goes Wrong

Notification appeared during recording? Enable Do Not Disturb before recording. Edit out the interruption afterward.

Text too small when watching back? Increase font sizes and re-record. There's no good fix in post.

Cursor hard to follow? Move more slowly and deliberately. Pause before each click.
